Nicole Hollmann (*1962 in Hamburg) ist eine deutsche Fotografin und Künstlerin. Aufgewachsen in Luhmühlen, lebt und arbeitet sie heute in Hamburg.

Die Weite der Lüneburger Heide, das Licht des Nordens und ein Elternhaus zwischen Medien, Fotografie und öffentlicher Aufmerksamkeit prägten früh ihr Bewusstsein für die Wirkung von Bildern und die Kraft der Wahrnehmung.

Ihre Bildsprache bewegt sich zwischen Fotografie und Malerei. Im Vordergrund stehen Licht, Farbe und Atmosphäre. Durch die bewusste Reduktion des Sichtbaren entstehen Bilder, die Raum für Wahrnehmung, Erinnerung und eigene Assoziationen lassen.

Nach ersten fotografischen Arbeiten und dem Abitur begann Nicole Hollmann 1983 eine Assistenz bei der Modefotografin Charlotte March. Es folgte eine Ausbildung zur Fotografin im Studio Bindseil für Werbefotografie in Hamburg, die sie 1986 als Preisträgerin des Centralverbandes Deutscher Photographen abschloss. Bis 1988 arbeitete sie anschließend als Assistentin von F.C. Gundlach in den PPS.Studios in Hamburg. Die Erfahrungen aus diesen Jahren prägen ihre fotografische Arbeit bis heute. Seit 1989 ist sie als freiberufliche Fotografin tätig.

Einen entscheidenden Wendepunkt markierte eine Reise nach New York City im Jahr 2008. Dort entwickelte Nicole Hollmann das Konzept Out of Focus, das zu einem zentralen Werkkomplex ihres künstlerischen Schaffens wurde. Die daraus entstandenen Arbeiten wurden bei den International Photography Awards ausgezeichnet und 2011 als Monografie Nicole Hollmann – Out of Focus im Kehrer Verlag veröffentlicht.

Werke aus dieser Serie wurden in der Hamburger Kunsthalle gezeigt. Weitere Arbeiten waren unter anderem im NRW-Forum Düsseldorf zu sehen. Heute befinden sich ihre Fotografien in öffentlichen und privaten Sammlungen, darunter die Sammlungen F.C. Gundlach und Roosen-Trinks. Seit 2016 ist Nicole Hollmann berufenes Mitglied der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Photographie (DGPh).

In einer Zeit permanenter Reizüberflutung interessiert mich nicht das Mehr, sondern das Weniger.

In meinen Fotografien treten Form, Farbe, Licht und Atmosphäre an die Stelle einer rein beschreibenden Abbildung der Wirklichkeit. Durch die Reduktion des Sichtbaren entstehen Bilder, die Raum für Wahrnehmung, Kontemplation und persönliche Assoziationen lassen.

Ich verstehe Fotografie nicht nur als Mittel der Dokumentation, sondern als Möglichkeit, Wahrnehmung neu zu erfahren und dem visuellen Lärm unserer Zeit einen stillen Gegenpol entgegenzusetzen.

Nicole Hollmann (born in Hamburg in 1962) is a German photographer and artist. Having grown up in Luhmühlen, she now lives and works in Hamburg.

The vastness of the Lüneburg Heath, the light of the North and a family environment shaped by media, photography and public attention fostered her early awareness of the impact of images and the power of perception.

Her visual language moves between photography and painting. Light, colour and atmosphere take centre stage. Through the deliberate reduction of the visible, images emerge that leave room for perception, memory and personal association.

Following her early photographic work and her A-levels, Nicole Hollmann began working as an assistant to fashion photographer Charlotte March in 1983. This was followed by an apprenticeship as a photographer at Studio Bindseil for advertising photography in Hamburg, which she completed in 1986 as a prize-winner of the Central Association of German Photographers. She then worked until 1988 as an assistant to F.C. Gundlach at PPS.Studios in Hamburg. The experiences from these years continue to shape her photographic work to this day. She has been working as a freelance photographer since 1989.

A trip to New York City in 2008 marked a decisive turning point. It was there that Nicole Hollmann developed the concept *Out of Focus*, which became a central body of work in her artistic practice. The resulting works were recognized at the International Photography Awards and published in 2011 as the monograph *Nicole Hollmann – Out of Focus* by Kehrer Verlag.

Works from this series were exhibited at the Hamburger Kunsthalle. Further works were on display at venues including the NRW-Forum Düsseldorf. Today, her photographs are held in public and private collections, including the F.C. Gundlach and Roosen-Trinks collections. Since 2016, Nicole Hollmann has been an appointed member of the German Photographic Society (DGPh).

Artist Statement

In a time of constant sensory overload, I am interested not in more, but in less.

In my photographs, form, colour, light and atmosphere take the place of a purely descriptive representation of reality. Through the reduction of the visible, images emerge that leave room for perception, contemplation and personal associations.

I see photography not only as a means of documentation, but as a way of re-experiencing perception and offering a quiet counterpoint to the visual noise of our time.
